About the Book

Wednesday’s Child is an autobiographical novel set in Toronto between the mid-1940’s and the mid-1970’s.   From Cabbagetown to the Beaches, the book traces the life of Kate as she struggles to find her identity as the fourth of nine children in a poor family.  As a young child, Kate is friendly and sociable but, as she reaches adolescence, she realizes she’s an outcast and has no idea how to fix herself.  Her feelings of isolation and shame are magnified when her family moves to a more affluent neighborhood and accepts handouts of used clothing and weekly groceries.

As a teenager, Kate is attracted to boys but wonders how she’ll ever find one when they hardly know she exists.  At fifteen, she falls for a classmate named Reggie and gains a feeling of acceptance and stability in her life.  But as their relationship gathers momentum toward their seemingly inevitable marriage, Kate senses that something is missing and begins to question her own motives.  Should she stay with Reggie, or should she somehow find the courage to strike out on her own?
